Cedar Twilled Basket (Gifted)

Sold - No Longer Available
The base and spokes of this basket are made with the cambium side of Eastern Red Cedar inner bark. The black row is Black Walnut, and the gray row is Willow. The green twined rows are of Rattlesnake Master leaves, a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. The glossy white bands are hand-pounded Black Ash splints. Split inner bark of Cedar makes up the central diagonal twill pattern. A technique commonly used among the Northwestern coastal Indians, called a Swinomish fold, is used to finish the rim. All the woven materials for this basket were gathered and prepared entirely by hand, from the standing trees and plants to the finished basket.
