Hanging Mail Basket (Sold)

Sold - No Longer Available
This basket is made with natural materials harvested and prepared by hand, and carefully twined and woven together. It measures 13” across x 3-1/2” deep x 5-1/2” high. Eastern Red Cedar inner bark (Juniperus virginiana) is the material used for the base and spokes. The middle section of dark brown herringbone weave is made with thin strips of peeled inner bark from American Elm (Ulmus americana). The grey upper and lower bands are the bark from young saplings of Sandbar Willow (Salix interior). The green twined rows are of Rattlesnake Master leaves (Eryngium yuccifolium), a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. The rim is of American Elm (Ulmus americana) inner bark lashed with another very thin strip, also of Elm. Hand twisted Rattlesnake Master leaves make up the hanging cord. The dangle has a variety of antique trade beads and seed beads, including seed beads from Africa, drift seeds called Ear Pods, and Job’s Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), a distant relative of corn that has been used for centuries for bead decoration. The central polished stone is a Chilean agate.
