Large Plaited Basket (Sold)

Sold - No Longer Available
This basket is made with natural materials harvested and prepared by hand, and carefully twined and woven together. It measures 9” high x 5-1/2” wide x 5-1/4” deep. Eastern Red Cedar inner bark (Juniperus virginiana) is the material used for the base and spokes. The upper and lower bands of dark brown weavers are made with thin strips of peeled inner bark from American Elm (Ulmus americana). The middle band of grey is made with strips of peeled inner and outer bark from Sandbar Willow saplings (Salix interior). The green twined rows are of Rattlesnake Master leaves (Eryngium yuccifolium), a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. And the white twined rows are of Basswood fiber (Tilia americana). The rim is made with Willow and thin strips of American Elm as lashing. And the hanging handle is a strand of braided Willow bark. The dangle has a variety of antique trade beads and seed beads, including betel nuts, seed beads from Africa, and Job’s Tears (Coix lacryma-jobi), a distant relative of corn that has been used for centuries for bead decoration. The central red bead is antique pipestone, considered sacred by the Native American people.
