Red-Handled Rib Basket (Sold)

Sold - No Longer Available
This rib basket is made with several different natural materials harvested and prepared by hand, and carefully woven together. It measures 9-3/4” across x 10” deep x 8-3/4” high to the handle. The handle is made with Red-osier Dogwood (Cornus sericea) and the ribs are of Willow shoots. The God’s Eye is peeled Honeysuckle. The shiny green cordage is of Rattlesnake Master (Eryngium yuccifolium), a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. The leaves are hand twisted into cordage to make strong, flexible weavers. The red section is made with more Willow shoots. The white cordage is of Basswood fiber (Tilia americana). The inner bark of this tree is soaked in a pond for several weeks, and then separated into thin ribbons of fiber, which are hand twisted into cordage. The narrow yellow section is made with English basket Willow, and the grey weavers are bark strips peeled from young saplings of Sandbar Willow (Salix interior). Finally the middle section of shiny green weavers are again cordage hand twisted with Rattlesnake Master leaves.
