Restored Rib Basket (Not For Sale)

Not Available For Sale.
This large rib basket is a hybrid made from an old Black Ash rib basket that was disintegrating, and newly gathered barks and leaves of several different native species of trees and plants. The old rib basket had such a wonderful oak handle and structure, that it had to be salvaged. The framework looks to be all hand-split and carved, and is still very strong. The Godís Eyes are made from young Shagbark Hickory bark, with the outer bark left on. The orange is Eastern Red Cedar, with the cambium layer turned to the outside with each row. The black bands are the inner bark of Black Walnut. The silvery grey of the Willow weavers is the outer bark, which is left on when harvested. The shiny greenish sections are of Rattlesnake Master leaves, a tall-grass prairie plant, once commonly found in Missouri. The leaves are thigh-spun into 2-ply cordage. All restored materials were harvested, prepared, and created entirely by hand, from the standing trees and plants to the finished basket.
