Description
This olive oil bottle is cushioned with a basket made with the inner bark of Eastern Red Cedar as the base and spokes. The weavers are of hand pounded Black Ash, the inner bark of American Elm, and the outer bark of Willow. The center twill design uses split strips of Cedar. The twining rows are of Rattlesnake Master leaves, a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. The rim is finished with a technique commonly used among the Northwestern coastal Indians, called a Swinomish fold. All the woven materials for this basket were gathered and prepared entirely by hand, from the standing trees and plants to the finished basket.
