Description
The base and spokes of this basket are made with the split side of Eastern Red Cedar inner bark. The dark brown bands are American Elm. Willow outer bark makes up the gray bands. The green twined rows are of Rattlesnake Master leaves, a tall grass prairie plant that was once very common in Missouri. A technique commonly used among the Northwestern coastal Indians, called a Swinomish fold, is used to finish the rim. Acacia seeds, horn beads, and glass beads make up the central ring of decoration. All the woven materials for this basket were gathered and prepared entirely by hand, from the standing trees and plants to the finished basket.
